The location is now known as the Costa Brava, has been, for centuries, a passageway and settlement by numerous peoples and cultures, and the gateway to the Peninsula from the Mediterranean Europe. The oldest historical remains found in the Iberian settlement of Ullastret, perfectly excavated, restored and exhibited. Also the archaeological site of Empúries, one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula with respect to the Greek and Roman colonization. Roses, inside the Citadel collects an important archaeological site where the remains of a part of the district Hellenistic Greek colony of Rhode, for another Roman villa dated between centuries BC and VI AD also Lombard Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria of the eleventh century, and finally, the findings of the nineteenth century.

The legacy of Romanesque monuments is the best example of the architectural Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Other works are the collegiate Romanesque Santa Maria de Vilabertran or the Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera.

The mark is also present in the medieval old town of Girona, one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in the country and the Cathedral of Santa Maria. As populations so well preserved as Pals, Peratallada, San Lorenzo de la Muga or walled old town of Tossa de Mar.

But more than 150 sites are part of the heritage and monuments of the Costa Brava.

Leisure centers
Coastal towns or villages are characterized by a highly specialized tourism. Its main economic activity and its raison d'être is tourism; offer a wide range of accommodation and concentrated a large number of activities related to entertainment such as water parks, restaurants, bars, pubs and nightclubs. The tourist towns that make this type are in the Alt Emporda, Roses and Empuriabrava, the Lower Empordà Estartit, Palamos, Sant Antoni de Calonge and Platja d'Aro and La Selva Lloret de Mar.
